What is Sweden’s Data Protection Act ?

The Swedish Data Protection Act (DPA) of 2018 is the data protection and privacy regulation in Sweden. This law supplements the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and tailors its provisions to the particular national context. The “Datainspektionen” is the national data protection authority in Sweden.

The DPA protects the data privacy of individuals and as such it contains a number of provisions and requirements related to the processing of personal data of individuals. This law includes a provision, clarifying that the provisions of the GDPR shall not be applicable in case they contradict the provisions of the Freedom of the Press Act.  In Sweden, the Fundamental Law on the Freedom of Expression is part of the national Constitution and therefore, is of fundamental value.
