What is Mexico’s Data Protection Law ?

The Federal Law on the Protection of Personal Data held by Private Parties is the major data protection and privacy regulation in Mexico. The law aims to promote the protection of personal information processed in Mexico and gives rights to individuals regarding their personal information. The National Institute of Transparency for Access to Information and Personal Data Protection and the Ministry of Economy serve as Mexico’s data protection authorities.

The law protects the data privacy of individuals and as such it contains a number of privacy principles related to the processing of personal data of individuals. The law applies to private or public organisations. The right to privacy is recognized right of the Constitution of Mexico and therefore, is of fundamental value.
