What is APPI ?
The Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI) is the major data protection and privacy regulation in Japan. The APPI was originally enacted in 2003 but was amended in 2017. The APPI aims to promote the protection of personal information processed in Japan and gives rights to individuals regarding their personal information. The Personal Information Protection Commission is a central agency and acts as data protection authority in Japan.
The APPI protects the data privacy of individuals and as such it contains a number of provisions and requirements related to the processing of personal data of individuals. The APPI applies to all organisations that handle the personal data of individuals located in Japan. This refers both to companies that are located in Japan as well as companies located outside of Japan. In Indonesia the right to privacy is recognized as a right by the Constitution and therefore, of fundamental value.
