What is Austria’s DSG ?

The Austrian DSG stands for “Datenschutzgesetz“ and is the Austrian data protection and privacy regulation. The DSG supplements the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and tailors its provisions to the particular national context. Moreover, it provides the legal basis for the structure and powers of the “Datenschutzbehörde” (DSB), which is an active data protection authority and has issued substantial fines.  

The DSG protects the data privacy of individuals and as such it contains a number of provisions and requirements related to the processing of personal data of individuals. In Austria, the right to privacy includes data privacy, which is a recognized human right and is part of the national Constitution and therefore, is of fundamental value.
